Got your attention, didn’t I?  Happiness and Marines? Happiness and Soldiers?  When was the last time you saw a man or woman in uniform.  Probably at the airport, the grocery store or the bank.  Given our current global conflict situation, chances are you will spot one of our service men and women in uniform.

Many of us not used to the Military might stare or wonder, but I’m here today to give you the opportunity to increase our global level of happiness, to support the men and women in our troops and to make a difference.

The next time you see one of our armed forces members, a simple “Thank you for your service,” can make all the difference in their day.  When they go back to their family or their barracks I have seen with my own eyes the difference in that small bit of honoring.  The stand a little taller, their eyes are a little brighter and best of all they share that feeling with their buddies.  And then their Military buddies share that feeling with their friends and family and we create a wave of happiness that washes through our troops.

They are doing their part by serving our country.  We can do our part by showing them our respect, honor and support.  So the next time you see a Soldier or a Marine, tell them thank you.  We all need to do our part in supporting each other because freedom doesn’t come free. And remember, happiness and supporting those who serve does not have a political affiliation or price.

Shimmy and Shake up your Routines by Lisa Cypers Kamen and What is Your Happiness

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

Recently I took a Zumba class after repeated requests from one of my friends. After many hours in the gym with my personally designed fitness routine to reduce my stress and take care of my body I was delighted with the class.  Looking around the room I saw men and women of every shape, size, color, age and fitness level. Most importantly, they all had one thing in common.  They were all smiling. It was joyful. It was infectious.  I found myself smiling at people I had never met as we shimmied to the dance music.

I realized then that routines are comforting and familiar.  After all, they are routine!  But what routine can do is blind us to the opportunities to the beautiful variety available in life. Doing the same thing over and over can dull your senses, make you deaf, blind and dumb to the sensations around us.  Taking that class reminded me that climbing on the spin bike, plugging into my same playlist and riding my 15 miles in 45 minutes though comforting was limiting my joy.

I forgot how much fun it was to sometimes shake up my routine. Take a different way to your child’s school  Stop at a different Starbucks.  Take a different class at your gym and shimmy and shake up your routine.  You might be surprised and make a new friend, enjoy a new activity or find a new flavored coffee.  It’s the little things in life that bring us joy.  So shimmy and shake up your routine today!

Keeping it Simple by Lisa Cypers Kamen and What is Your Happiness

Did you ever notice that life could start feeling like a battle for your time, affection, energy and physical being.  My friends want me to do this. My work demands me to be here.  My kids need me there. My mother wants me to call. My sister is mad because I forgot her birthday.  Yet you are only one person, and many days we need to be three of four people.

You become a soldier in your own war only the battleground is your life and your sanity.  If you don’t want to fight this kind of war, you need to simplify your life. This is not as easy as it sounds. But you can begin each morning by talking to yourself before you get swept down the rushing river of you day to identify what one thing can you do to change about your life that will make your life easier.  Can you stop long enough to think about what you need and what would make you happy?  That’s right, in the frantic chaos of life you matter.

I am here today to put you back into the equation of your life. If you don’t, you will end up feeling exhausted, stretched, overburdened and resentful. No one expects you to be superwoman or superman, and no one ever died because you forgot to send a thank you note.  This is not permission to be selfish, but it is permission to take care of yourself and a lot of times that means getting real, keeping it simple and saying no when you can’t.

Deserving the Good in Life by Lisa Cypers Kamen and What is Your Happiness

It’s easy to say that we are love, that we are all loved in one-way or another, or altogether. Sometimes we can feel as though we are less than other people or that we are somehow less deserving of the good in life than others.  These thoughts are usually based in fear, insecurity and a lapse in personal confidence.  The fact is, everyone feels this way sometimes.  It’s important to recognize that this is a just a thought accompanied by feelings and that this will pass.

It will pass faster if you change your thinking to repeating an affirmation in your mind that you deserver the good things in life just as much as anyone else because you are worth of love, support, care and good things.  When you get away from your limiting thoughts that encourage you to feel unworthy, you can open your heart, mind, spirit and life to receiving the blessings that are due to you and that you can share with others.   By letting yourself accept the good things in life, you allow more of them to come into your life.

You are entitled to flourish and thrive. You do not have to feel guilty for the blessings in your life.  It’s okay to give yourself over to the good in life and say, “I deserve this and I am worthy of the goodness in my life.”

Beauty by Lisa Cypers Kamen and What is Your Happiness

There is infinite beauty in all of us and surrounding us if we pause a moment to notice what is

often right in front of us.  But in our busy, cell phone, iPod, rush-rush-rush daily lives we often fail to notice the beautiful creations that are we, within us and around us.  There is great power in the recognition of beauty.

Stop for a moment while reading this and look around.  See something beautiful? Take a moment and focus on the beauty.  Immediately the object of your desire passes its energy to you effortlessly.  That’s one of the reasons we love beautiful things – they help us feel good. They give their beauty to us in the form of pleasure, wonder, delight and you guessed it, happiness.

You can find beauty in nature, in art, in a child’s smile, or the simple joy of favorite pair of shoes or even in this moment! And never forget you are a being of great beauty – an amazing complex human machine with a glowing inner light that shines through your eyes, face, smile, posture, actions and most of all your heart.  Keep in mind today, and everyday, that beauty brings a powerful force to your life and when you need a boost, it’s a free, easy and powerful choice.

Breaking the Worry Habit by Lisa Cypers Kamen and What is Your Happiness

Worry is so commonplace these days that it’s become an epidemic of fear-based stagnation. Did you every notice that 90% of the things you worry about never happen? I can’t tell you how many times I worried about a friend, my children or myself only to find that my worries were unfounded and never came to fruition.

One of the things about worry is that its effects are not desirable for a happy and satisfied life.  Worry can create stress, tension, aging, addictions, insomnia, and eat up your day before you know it.  A lot of times people don’t realize that worry is the base of these feelings and underneath that is fear—fear of losing control, fear of the unknown, fear of losing a friend, fear of my child being hurt and fear that I will lose something important to me.

So what do you do?  One of the things you can do is turn your worry into action and if you can’t, then you need to tell yourself to stop worrying and do something else.  If you find yourself unable to control your worrisome thoughts, its time to turn on a happy movie, read a good book, says a prayer to your higher power or pick up a tennis ball and hit a few rounds.  The whole point is to change your state.  Change your focus and soon you will find yourself happier and more productive.

Happiness and Customer Service by Lisa Cypers Kamen of What is Your Happiness
Lisa Cypers Kamen Harvesting Happiness

Lisa Cypers Kamen Harvesting Happiness

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

There are two questions we can ask ourselves when it comes to customer service: who are our customers? How can we serve them?

Most people don’t expect to find happiness, working a customer service job. But customer service, by its very nature, presents unique opportunities for the pursuit of happiness, not only for individuals, but for society as a whole.

Using this framework, can we, as providers, find happiness through customer service?

The consistent practice of outstanding customer service behaviors requires an extraordinary amount of self-control. It starts with the realization that YOU are in control.

  • You choose your attitude
  • You choose your response
  • You choose to set aside your personal problems
  • You choose to give others a better day

When we take control, we refuse to be victims of our own personal weaknesses. We take charge of our lives and of the situations that we face. This is a principal requirement of a life in service and, as it turns out, a principal requirement for a happy life.

“Thank you” is perhaps that the second most important customer service phrase. We use it (or ought to use it) dozens of times a day.

When you consistently practice customer service values and skills, such as kindness, listening, empathy, gratitude, responsibility, and persuasion, you develop habits that will stay with you for the rest of your life, and that can be applied to all other aspects of your life. You’ll be able to make friends more easily, and will be better skilled at strengthening your relationships with your friends and family. They in turn will tend to reciprocate.

This has two components. There’s the respect that you get for how you do your job, and there’s the respect you get for having that job. It’s not easy to provide outstanding customer service to every customer, on every transaction, every minute of the day. If you can do that, that’s something you can truly be proud of, and it’s certainly deserving of respect. Chances are you already stand out, and are duly rewarded.

The second component, respect for the job itself, depends less on the individual, and more on the team as a whole. When everyone in your organization provides outstanding service, people tend to talk about you, and you’re likely to be known and respected for the service that you provide. It’s a source of pride just to be part of such a team. The hard part is that it does depend on everyone. All it takes is one bad player to ruin the whole game. Service with a smile rules even when that smile is invisible to the person on the other end of the phone.

The principles at the root of outstanding customer service are simple enough to say:

  • Our lives have more meaning when we serve others
  • Customer service is, first and foremost, a form of service
  • To serve each other and each customer is to serve humanity

As customer service providers, we touch millions of people each year. Each contact is an opportunity to make each life we touch a little better each day. And when we make people happy, they tend to pay it forward.
