Harvesting Happiness Talk Radio Presents a Special Encore Broadcast with Arun Gandhi November 14th

Born in 1934 in Durban, South Africa as the grandson of  Mohandas K. “Mahatma” Gandhi, Arun Gandhi grew up under the discriminatory apartheid laws of South Africa. He was beaten by “white” South Africans for being too black and “black” South Africans for being too white; so, Arun sought eye-for-an-eye justice. However, he learned from his parents and grandparents that justice does not mean revenge, it means transforming the opponent through love and suffering.

Grandfather taught Arun to understand nonviolence through understanding violence. “If we know how much passive violence we perpetrate against one another we will understand why there is so much physical violence plaguing societies and the world,” Gandhi said. Through daily lessons, Arun says, he learned about violence and about anger.

He and his wife, Sunanda, founded The M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, based in Memphis, Tennessee in 1991 The institute’s mission is “to promote and apply the principles of nonviolence locally, nationally, and globally, to prevent violence, and resolve personal and public conflicts through research, education, and programming.”

Harvesting Happiness Talk Radio Welcomes Charley Johnson January 11th

The concept of Pay it Forward dates back to ancient Greece in 317 BC. The model was used as a key plot element of the play Dyskolos, (a title which can be translated as “The Grouch”) by Menander. His work was lost in the Middle Ages and the theory was rediscovered by Benjamin Franklin and described in a letter below to Benjamin Webb dated April 25, 1784.

“I do not pretend to give such a Sum; I only lend it to you. When you […] meet with another honest Man in similar Distress, you must pay me by lending this Sum to him; enjoining him to discharge the Debt by a like operation, when he shall be able, and shall meet with another opportunity. I hope it may thus go thro’ many hands, before it meets with a Knave that will stop its Progress. This is a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money.”

Charley Johnson: An entrepreneur and former Owner/Executive V.P. of a Manufacturing company with over 250 employees has a deep passion for Pay it Forward.  Believing in Pay it Forward so much so he left his company, career & millions behind to change the world and how people view humanity.

Breaking the Worry Habit by Lisa Cypers Kamen and What is Your Happiness
Lisa Cypers Kamen Harvesting Happiness

Lisa Cypers Kamen Harvesting Happiness

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

Worry is so commonplace these days that it’s become an epidemic of fear-based stagnation. Did you every notice that 90% of the things you worry about never happen? I can’t tell you how many times I worried about a friend, my children or myself only to find that my worries were unfounded and never came to fruition.

One of the things about worry is that its effects are not desirable for a happy and satisfied life.  Worry can create stress, tension, aging, addictions, insomnia, and eat up your day before you know it.  A lot of times people don’t realize that worry is the base of these feelings and underneath that is fear—fear of losing control, fear of the unknown, fear of losing a friend, fear of my child being hurt and fear that I will lose something important to me.

So what do you do?  One of the things you can do is turn your worry into action and if you can’t, then you need to tell yourself to stop worrying and do something else.  If you find yourself unable to control your worrisome thoughts, its time to turn on a happy movie, read a good book, says a prayer to your higher power or pick up a tennis ball and hit a few rounds.  The whole point is to change your state.  Change your focus and soon you will find yourself happier and more productive.

Negative emotions such as worry, anger, fear, and resentment are called negative emotions because they lead to thoughts that drain away our time, energy and forward direction.  Can you remember a time when you were feeling good, working on something or perhaps enjoying time with friends and then a worry or resentful feeling washed over you and lead to some negative thoughts? Pretty soon you find yourself feeling lousy, not wanting to participate and you might sit down and feel really terrible not wanting to do much of anything except feel bad.

That’s how negative emotions and thoughts derail us on the happy journey of life.  Now let’s look at the reverse.  Think about a time where you feel joy, elation, hope, and excitement.  Do you feel the power?   You can actually feel your power levels rise and you start moving – talking, dancing, creating and living.  So next time you find yourself down in the dumps, worrying, feeling angry, fearful or having resentments change your thoughts to something brighter and feel those negative emotions fall away.   In a positive state you can then do something about the situation that is related to those negative emotions and solve the problem.

Happiness and the Art of Coloring by Lisa Cypers Kamen of What is Your Happiness

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

Recently I was at a friend’s house and her ornery four-year-old was in the corner pitching a fit.

His harried mother had hired a babysitter, but the young girl had not show up and both mother and child had had enough.

Spying a box of crayons I pulled out a pad of paper and drew a circle.

“What’s in the circle?” I said, coaxing the little boy out of the corner. “I see a ship.”

“Where?” he said inching closer.

“Right here, and it’s a magic ship full of presents.”

This got his attention and he plopped down next to me.  For the next hour we drew beautiful, magical scenes filled with dragons wearing floppy hats, tall trees full of ice cream cones, and a duck with fourteen feet.  My friend, her son and I spend over an hour coloring in these pictures with every conceivable color known to Crayola.

We could have ranted and raged over the baby sitters’ no show. We could have fought with the little boy who pouted in the corner.  We could have chosen a lot of reactions.  Or we could choose to go with the flow, find something that we all enjoyed and make the best of it.   We didn’t get to go to the movies that night, but we did employ our own power of choice to make the best of the situation.  And you know what, our magical dragon with the floppy hat who delivered presents via a tall ship was a much better story than the movie we ultimately saw a week later.

And if you haven’t cracked open a box of crayons in a while, I would suggest you do. They bring us back to the moments of happiness we found simply by pushing a wax stick around a piece of paper and letting the magic happen.
