H-Factor Where Is Your Heart

Fear and Happiness by Lisa Cypers Kamen, What is Your Happiness

We are living during the time of the greatest global change in the history of the world.  Every day the unemployment rate climbs higher.  Homes are foreclosing with alarming frequency.   Many people do not have enough money to pay basic household bills or put a reasonable meal on the table.  To say the least, these are very, very scary times for most of us.   This is a time when we can become deeply frightened and very lost.  The solutions are not easy to find and surviving will require fortitude and character.

Amidst this chaos and confusion is the pursuit of happiness.  In spite of it all, the human spirit calls out for relief; it cries out for happiness.  So how do we find our happiness during the greatest era of stress and difficulty?  What does it take to be happy when our world is crumbling around us?  What is our H-factor?

Simply put, we can choose to be happy regardless of our personal circumstances.  In this choosing, we are not barred from facing our fears, feeling our pain, or having moments of anger and frustration.  The difference, here, is that we face our true feelings.  We do not deny what we feel.  Instead, we allow ourselves to be human, and to be human is to feel the gamut of emotions that life is sure to provoke.  If we can do this, the interesting paradox is that we will be able to choose happiness, not just once, but over and over again.  We are living in a state of liberation rather than control and repression.

Choosing happiness means we choose to engage intimately in all of our life experiences, but we are wise enough to not define ourselves by our external circumstances.  We are not defined by our bank accounts, our possessions, our relationships or our accomplishments.  And, we can allow our feelings to flow through us without denial.   Feelings come and feelings go, but we are not at the mercy of our feelings either.  It takes great strength and courage to feel at the deepest levels of our being.  Yet once we feel the truth of our experience, it takes but a breath to let it go.  This is so simple and so elegant.  We then have the space within ourselves for happiness to live freely and openly.
