H-Factor Where Is Your Heart

Raising our Children to Be Happy Adults by Lisa Cypers Kamen of What is Your Happiness

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

When you first become a parent, you are learning at an exponential rate. What you knew about babies yesterday is nothing compared to what you know today.  Taking care of the needs of your baby from infant to toddler changes from serving primarily their physical needs to helping them grow in their emotional needs.  This change happens subtly as you begin to relate to your child as an individual with their own wants and needs.

Teaching your children about happiness is as important as teaching them nutrition, grooming and how to read and write.  All the skills in the world, won’t matter much if your child is unhappy.  Unlocking the secrets to your child’s own internal happiness is something you can do together and will create lasting joy for both of you. For what is more rewarding for a parent than seeing their adult child happy and fulfilled in life.

Helping your child indentify what makes them happy is part of the process.  Talking with them, taking them to have new experiences and trying new things with them is a great start.  Teaching them that happiness is a choice and no matter what happens in the situation – they win or they lose , that how they respond is up to them.  Learning at an early age that many things are beyond our control, but how we respond to those situations is a valuable lesson that can increase your child’s happiness exponentially in their life.  And as parents, it doesn’t hurt to remind ourselves of that too.  Parenting is a difficult job and giving our children the skills to succeed in life, in happiness and in their heart begins with you.

Happiness and the Legal System by Lisa Cypers Kamen of What is Your Happiness

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

Sitting in court one day I was amazed at the myriad of reasons people go before a judge. From minor offenses to major life events, the sheer amount of drama found in today’s legal system is staggering.  From clerks, to bailiffs, to attorneys and their clients, everyone was navigating the legal system.

Was it frustrating? Yes.  Was it time consuming? Yes. Was there anyone in this room getting anything out of the system? Yes and No.  It got me thinking about systems and how do we sustain our level of happiness while going through a process that is largely beyond our control.

Do we throw up our hands? Do we offer up our faith? Do we simply go with the flow best we can?

All of the above.  In times when life feels beyond our control relaxing into the flow of the universe is something we can all do. This doesn’t mean we lay down your rights. This doesn’t mean we accept injustice. Nor does it mean we roll over in submission to defeat.  It does mean however that we recognize what we can change and what we cannot.  How we choose to respond to the situation is always our choice.

Do I yell at the clerk? Do I choose to sit quietly and wait my turn. Interestingly enough, while watching everyone herd through the courthouse through metal detectors in a long line in the hot sun I was surprised at the people who fought the tide and those who flowed with the tide.  We were all in the same stream. We must all pass through the same shoot.  I made my own choice to ride the wave as much as I could and did it change the outcome? No. But the process was less draining, less exhaustive and less impactful of my day.  This by far increased my own level of happiness and satisfaction because I felt in control of myself because you know what? I was, and you can be too. We can’t change most situations in life, but we can choose how we react to them.

Happiness and Creating a Happy Life by Lisa Cypers Kamen of What is Your Happiness

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

One of the things I have noticed is that the busier I get, the more I get done and often the less fulfilled and happy I feel on a daily basis.  Why is that?  I think in the current days of to do lists, iPhones and Blackberries, streaming video, wifi hot spots we are inundated with choices, real-time news opportunities and just plain stuff.  This can put us on a media treadmill that makes it very hard to disconnect and when we don’t disconnect we can travel very far from ourselves and create a life that ultimately does not serve us what we want or need.

One of the techniques that I find very helpful is immediately upon waking is that I first list in my head all that I am grateful for.  This moves me and my spirit into a place that feels divine.  Then I consciously choose to identify those things that are most important to me.  This is often my friends, my family, my needs, my career and my mission in life which is to increase the level of happiness in the world.

From there I make my priority to do list.  This is the list of items that must be done by me in the following hours to increase my overall level of satisfaction in my life.  Laundry is not on that list. Neither is picking up eggs and fruit at the market.  Do those things need to get done? Absolutely.  Do they increase my level of happiness? Not really unless I am hungry for an omelets or a smoothie.

Identifying those things that really serve us is the key to a happy life.   Hugging my daughter. Telling my son I am proud of him.  Calling my mother or father to say hello.  Writing a blog that I hope will lift up the person reading it. These are the items that make me feel happy.

And before my phone starts ringing, the emails pour in and the demands of the day from herding children off to school to preparing for my radio show get in the way, I need to makes sure I am fitting in the things that are really important to me.

Happiness and Changes in Your Daily Life by Lisa Cypers Kamen of What is Your Happiness

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

One of the best things about life is that it is ever changing, ever evolving and ever challenging.  It is through the changes, evolutions and challenges that we grow and hopefully take the steps to creating a better life for oursleves. This can be a daunting task for some as change can be frightening, overwhelming and stop us dead in our tracks.

How do we use our own personal happiness to help us navigate change.  One of the best ways I have found is to take a moment amidst the changes to try to find the good in those changes.  What initially appears like a change for the worse can be reframed in your mind as a change for the better. Once you start appreciating the change, you can then find the opportunity for growth and prosperity that is hiding under the fear.

Taking the time to really examine the changes in your life will give you the power to create from that which was at first frustrating.  Often times, change when it is forced upon us through life’s circumstances can be a door or a gateway to creating new things in our lives that will ultimately increase our overall level of happiness and satisfaction.  So the next time life throws you a curve ball, stop for a moment, look for the doors that are opening and hit that curve ball right out of the park!

Happiness and Poverty Thinking Versus Prosperity Thinking by Lisa Cypers Kamen of What is Your Happiness

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

As we look to create happiness in our lives, one of the most profound aspect that we can control is our ability to think certain thoughts.  Also called managing your mind, we all have the ability to change our thinking into a type of thinking that serves our greater good.

Poverty thinking is not just about not having money, it’s the thought pattern that takes us into a downward spiral of loss, despair and powerlessness.  Poverty thinking is the form of thinking that uses such phrases as “I will never, I can’t, No one will, It will always be”  Those types of absolute thoughts make it very difficult for us to try anything and without trying we will never succeed at anything and happiness will remain elusive.

Prosperity thinking is about hope and belief that one can succeed.  It is the thought pattern that lifts us up and gives us only the sky as the limit.  Prosperity thinking is the tool of  creators, inventors and people who are successful.  Success leaves clues and one of the big clues is that prosperity thinking is a must.

What’s secret behind having Poverty Thinking versus Prosperity Thinking?  The power of choice.  The power you and each one of us have to choose our own thoughts.  Why think I can’t do this when you can as easily think you can.  Its just the words you choose – you can or you can’t.  The only difference is that when you believe you can’t you will be right 100 percent of the time.  So why not believe you can? Why not choose Prosperity Thinking over Poverty Thinking.  It really is your choice.
