Worry is so commonplace these days that it’s become an epidemic of fear-based stagnation. Did you every notice that 90% of the things you worry about never happen? I can’t tell you how many times I worried about a friend, my children or myself only to find that my worries were unfounded and never came to fruition.
One of the things about worry is that its effects are not desirable for a happy and satisfied life. Worry can create stress, tension, aging, addictions, insomnia, and eat up your day before you know it. A lot of times people don’t realize that worry is the base of these feelings and underneath that is fear—fear of losing control, fear of the unknown, fear of losing a friend, fear of my child being hurt and fear that I will lose something important to me.
So what do you do? One of the things you can do is turn your worry into action and if you can’t, then you need to tell yourself to stop worrying and do something else. If you find yourself unable to control your worrisome thoughts, its time to turn on a happy movie, read a good book, says a prayer to your higher power or pick up a tennis ball and hit a few rounds. The whole point is to change your state. Change your focus and soon you will find yourself happier and more productive.

There are two questions we can ask ourselves when it comes to customer service: who are our customers? How can we serve them?
Most people don’t expect to find happiness, working a customer service job. But customer service, by its very nature, presents unique opportunities for the pursuit of happiness, not only for individuals, but for society as a whole.
Using this framework, can we, as providers, find happiness through customer service?
The consistent practice of outstanding customer service behaviors requires an extraordinary amount of self-control. It starts with the realization that YOU are in control.
- You choose your attitude
- You choose your response
- You choose to set aside your personal problems
- You choose to give others a better day
When we take control, we refuse to be victims of our own personal weaknesses. We take charge of our lives and of the situations that we face. This is a principal requirement of a life in service and, as it turns out, a principal requirement for a happy life.
“Thank you” is perhaps that the second most important customer service phrase. We use it (or ought to use it) dozens of times a day.
When you consistently practice customer service values and skills, such as kindness, listening, empathy, gratitude, responsibility, and persuasion, you develop habits that will stay with you for the rest of your life, and that can be applied to all other aspects of your life. You’ll be able to make friends more easily, and will be better skilled at strengthening your relationships with your friends and family. They in turn will tend to reciprocate.
This has two components. There’s the respect that you get for how you do your job, and there’s the respect you get for having that job. It’s not easy to provide outstanding customer service to every customer, on every transaction, every minute of the day. If you can do that, that’s something you can truly be proud of, and it’s certainly deserving of respect. Chances are you already stand out, and are duly rewarded.
The second component, respect for the job itself, depends less on the individual, and more on the team as a whole. When everyone in your organization provides outstanding service, people tend to talk about you, and you’re likely to be known and respected for the service that you provide. It’s a source of pride just to be part of such a team. The hard part is that it does depend on everyone. All it takes is one bad player to ruin the whole game. Service with a smile rules even when that smile is invisible to the person on the other end of the phone.
The principles at the root of outstanding customer service are simple enough to say:
- Our lives have more meaning when we serve others
- Customer service is, first and foremost, a form of service
- To serve each other and each customer is to serve humanity
As customer service providers, we touch millions of people each year. Each contact is an opportunity to make each life we touch a little better each day. And when we make people happy, they tend to pay it forward.

Recently I was at a friend’s house and her ornery four-year-old was in the corner pitching a fit.
His harried mother had hired a babysitter, but the young girl had not show up and both mother and child had had enough.
Spying a box of crayons I pulled out a pad of paper and drew a circle.
“What’s in the circle?” I said, coaxing the little boy out of the corner. “I see a ship.”
“Where?” he said inching closer.
“Right here, and it’s a magic ship full of presents.”
This got his attention and he plopped down next to me. For the next hour we drew beautiful, magical scenes filled with dragons wearing floppy hats, tall trees full of ice cream cones, and a duck with fourteen feet. My friend, her son and I spend over an hour coloring in these pictures with every conceivable color known to Crayola.
We could have ranted and raged over the baby sitters’ no show. We could have fought with the little boy who pouted in the corner. We could have chosen a lot of reactions. Or we could choose to go with the flow, find something that we all enjoyed and make the best of it. We didn’t get to go to the movies that night, but we did employ our own power of choice to make the best of the situation. And you know what, our magical dragon with the floppy hat who delivered presents via a tall ship was a much better story than the movie we ultimately saw a week later.
And if you haven’t cracked open a box of crayons in a while, I would suggest you do. They bring us back to the moments of happiness we found simply by pushing a wax stick around a piece of paper and letting the magic happen.

We live in a world full of choices. From our hairspray to our hamburgers, it seems that the more we seek the more choices we have. Choices can empower us and choices can overwhelm us. In our instant gratification society, where the choices come fast and furious, where do we begin in making the choices that impact our daily lives?
I would like to offer to you the notion that sometimes choice is best served by choosing to do nothing. There are days that seemingly never end and for those days I choose rest. Yes, you heard me, I choose rest. I shut of the computers and the TV. I unplug my kids from their IPods and their Play Stations. I close the curtains on the chilly day, build a fire and I rest. My kids rest with me. And for a few precious hours we are just in a state of being.
No music. No TV. No books to read. No talking. When this happens, I find that we all end up on one couch under one blanket. One family resting. It’s at these still moments that I feel the energy of my family. I feel the love that binds us. It doesn’t last long as the bickering soon begins between my kids, but for that brief moment in time when all is quiet our bodies recharge.
Soon we are onto our baseball filled, riding lesson, trumpet recital lives and the days pass in a blur. But from time to time, one of my secrets to happiness, is to stop – choose to do nothing and in it you begin to find everything you need.
