WHAT IS YOUR HAPPINESS? HAPPINESS AND TEENAGERS BY LISA CYPERS KAMEN

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

Teenagers are at a point in their lives where they are figuring out who they are, their relationships with people, and how they fit into this world. They’re not kids anymore, but they’re also not adults. They want to be in charge of their lives.

What is happiness? Everyone wants to be happy or become happier. In order to bring more happiness into our lives, we need to know what gives us pleasure right now and what makes us happy in the long run. Many people who are lucky enough to have all their basic needs met and them some –  food, housing, the love of family and friends — still experience anxiety, stress, and depression. Let’s explore the idea that happiness actually doesn’t depend on our circumstances.

Happiness is something that we can learn from each other. What do your friends and family think about happiness? How do the TV shows and video games you see talk about happiness?

Teens pursue happiness with three goals in mind: the pleasure of the moment, relationships with family and friends and the long-term search for meaning and purpose – in other words, friends, family and faith. They may not always be able to articulate their thoughts and feelings. That’s where we come in as parents and mentors living by positive example. Ask yourself…are you a living and breathing embodiment of joy that is demonstrating a positive legacy for our adults-in-training?

Friends

Online friendships are just as important as face-to-face contact with friends.

Family

Teens perceive their parents as looking out for their best interests. If parents keep talking to their teens, you can be sure that the teens are listening. You can be a partner for your teenager.

Faith

Faith is important to teens, even if it is not traditional. They may take different ideas from different faiths to make their own “customized” form of spirituality.

WHAT IS YOUR HAPPINESS? HAPPINESS AND MEMORIES BY LISA CYPERS KAMEN

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

We must learn to use memories only to remember happy moments, so that we can utilize them for the present task. In doing that successfully, we build memories — happy memories — for tomorrow. The troubles of yesterday must be forgotten, lost in the tomb of time. Every day is a new lifetime that must be lived to the full: Creatively.

What are the characteristics of a creative mind? First, a sense of direction, a goal. Then, a problem, clearly defined, and all the possible solutions. After that, the selection of the best solution and acting on it. You must have the ability to forget a problem, temporarily, if it defies solution and the capacity to rise above failures.

We are all creative because we all possess imagination. Imagination can be used for negative or positive outcomes. For example, worrying creates negative imagination whereas happiness creates positive imagination.

We can think creatively when:

1. We think clearly about a problem.

2. We think of all possible solutions.

3. We accept the best and act upon it.

4. We forget the problem, temporarily, if it defies solution.

Create the habit of happiness. This is easy if we make the effort every day. It will be second nature in pour day the more we make the conscious effort and choice to be happy. It all starts within you!

WHAT IS YOUR HAPPINESS? HAPPINESS IN THE MOMENT BY LISA CYPERS KAMEN

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

How can we find happiness in the moment? It starts with making a moment-by-moment choice, not something put on us—or destroyed by—outside forces. It has been proven to me time and time again that grasping for happiness from people and events in our lives will never establish it on any firm foundation.

When we are fully in the present moment instead of absorbed in our thoughts about the past or the future or thoughts about ourselves and how our life is going, life feels good, we feel happy and at peace. However, if we bring thoughts into this moment that cause us to feel unhappy and discontent with the present moment, we won’t experience that inherent happiness and peace. We will think that our life isn’t good, that happiness isn’t available, when it is.

Happiness is something that is pregnant with potential in any given moment of our lives. It is what we do with our thoughts in the moment that will bring us either happiness or unhappiness.

Ask yourself: How do I choose to look at an event or moment in my life? Will it be a positive or negative experience? What impact will it have on you?

“There is no happiness; there are only moments of happiness.”
[anon; Spanish Proverb]

WHAT IS YOUR HAPPINESS? HAPPINESS AND YOUR SENSES BY LISA CYPERS KAMEN

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

Taste

Do you slowly enjoy each mouthful on your plate?  In our hectic lives we can sometimes forget how enjoyable food can be.  We are lucky enough to be able to enjoy foods from all over the world.  Take your time with your evening meal tonight, plan something you try and plan a special meal once a week, it will give you something to look forward to and keep you smiling to yourself.

Touch

I love a hug with my loved ones to show them how much I value and appreciate them.  Not only does this act of kindness make me feel good, it also can give them a boost, knowing that they are valued. Touching things around you can lessen your stress levels and help you relax.

Smell

Maybe you like the smell of freshly cut grass or a home baked loaf of bread. Our sense of smell sometimes triggers memories of where we know that scent from like roses remind you of grandma’s garden, or baby powder reminds you of bathing your children.  Whatever the smell, the good ones can make us smile with pleasure when we smell them.

Hearing

Our ears can bring us so many pleasures!  First of all there’s the sound of laughter, or listening to your favorite music to bring a smile to your face and a cheer to your heart.

Many people find listening to books easier or more pleasurable than reading them.

Sight

Our eyes are another sense that can give us an overwhelming display of the enjoyable things in life.  Wandering round a new place, you take in a whole array of new things to look at. Take time out in a garden to enjoy the flowers and plants in it.  Just looking at the smile on a loved one’s face can make you smile just as widely.  The world around us gives us lots of things for our eyes to drink in, take time out from your busy life and have a look around where you live or work.  There are many things around us that are a pleasure to see we don’t always notice them.

Our senses are some the most valuable tools we have to bring awareness to our surroundings and ourselves. Let’s use them to their fullest to make our lives more pleasurable and get the most out of our lives to make them as happy as possible.

WHAT IS YOUR HAPPINESS? COMPLAINING BY LISA CYPERS KAMEN

By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

Your complaints may seem fully justified, but realize that whenever you complain, you are placing your order for more of the same.  Complaining is not merely about the past.  Whenever you make a complaint, realize you are setting an intention — a goal — for the future.

Complaining is the act of reinforcing what you don’t want and intending even more of it.  It’s the act of dwelling on the negative.

The complainers are merely witnessing the fulfillment of their own requests.  Every thought is an intention, and complainers habitually intend what they don’t want.  So it makes perfect sense they live in a reality consistent with those thoughts.  The complainer may tell you their reality is causing their complaints, but it’s more accurate to say their reality is reflecting their complaints.

Complaining is also addictive.  The more you do it, even within your own mind, the more it becomes an ingrained habit and the harder it is to stop. Consider that if something unfortunate happens to you, and you’re going to complain about it afterwards, then there must have been some kind of complainer seed within you in the first place… before that negative event took place.  You must already have been the kind of person who’s predisposed to complain.

Really positive people who are good at manifesting don’t complain.  Even when things don’t go their way, they keep directing their thoughts towards the positive side.  They expect that things will eventually go their way.  They also take action to participate in the positive manifestation.
